Facial hair is one of those things that most women experience, yet no one really wants to talk about. Because it can be embarrassing. I know this because this is a frequent topic of discussion between my friends and I. The reason I’m writing this blog post is to share some encouragement, and provide some information on what you can expect if you’re considering laser hair removal.
Last week, I had my first laser hair removal session at Skin Rejuvenation Clinic here in Edina, and let me tell you, it was nothing like I anticipated. It was an easy, and totally pain free process; I never would’ve guessed. I’m lasering my chin so the process isn’t as extensive since it’s a small area. I really hate the space hairs on my chin; it’s not horrible but I hate having to pluck any hairs off my chin.. at all. Prior to the session, Kate, one of the lead Aesthetician at SRC provided me with protective eyewear to wear. She then applied a cooling gel to the area followed by the laser. I would describe the feeling similar to a “zapping, stingy feel” every time the laser targeted the hairs. The session lasted about 20 minutes start to finish and that includes prep and everything. The actual laser part maybe lasted 10 minutes or less. The length of time may vary though, depending on the area you’re lasering and how much hair there is.
Things to consider:
Go in for a CONSULTATION to make sure you’re a candidate for laser hair removal. This is the time to ask every single question you may have. Don’t leave with doubts! ASK!
During my consultation with Kate, one of the lead Aesthetician at Skin Rejuvenation Clinic she recommended treatments every 4-6 weeks. She suggested starting out with a lower range and increase strength as needed to avoid scarring the skin, which causes hyperpigmentaon. In today’s society, instant gratification is prevalent where as we want results NOW. Trust me, Im familiar with this all too well, so you’re not alone. However, increasing the strength of the laser won’t remove the hair any faster, and it’s more likely to scar, therefore it’s best to start low and increase as necessary.
No waxing or plucking of area is permitted at anytime! Since the laser is targeting the hair in the follicle, you risk scarring your skin if you pluck the hair as the laser will prove to be ineffective. The laser is targeting the hair below the skin/dermis, so plucking the hair will leave nothing for the laser to grab, which means you’re lasering your skin for well, nothing. Whatever you do, don’t pluck! You can however shave the area, as shaving will not remove the hair from the follicle.
Be PATIENT– Laser hair removal isn’t a one stop shop. If you’re lasering a bigger part of your body, you’ll need more treatments, therefore treatment will last longer. I’m going to be getting six treatments for my chin and thats a 6-7 month process as I’ll be getting treatments every 4-6 weeks. It takes time; patience and consistency is key. I wouldn’t recommend skipping months either. Also, keep in mind that the area lasered will not be smooth and hair free immediately after treatment. Kate shared that over time with treatments, the hair will start to fall out of the follicle. Patience Grasshopper.
As I mentioned earlier, you can shave during treatment. It’s best to shave the area before you go in. If you do not shave the hair above the dermis, the hair will take longer to be lasered which could end up irritating the skin.
There’s a good chance that the area will be red after treatment but that fades quickly. I actually did not experience redness after my first treatment, and was able to apply lotion and makeup after my session and my skin was just fine. Just know that results vary; which is why again, consultation is an imperative part of the process.
Okay, so now that I’ve told you about my first experience and shared some tips on what you can expect. I want to share my first thoughts on Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. Before I do that, let me start by saying (to maintain a level of integrity, and transparency) that this post is sponsored by Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. However, all contents of this post are written by me and reflect my true opinions.
When I walked into Skin Rejuvenation Clinic for my consult, one of the first things I noticed was how HUGE the clinic was. I was expecting a small, boutique like clinic, and I was utterly surprised. Even though it’s a huge space, I’m talking two levels, it was warm, and inviting. I’m really huge on ambiance, I think it sets the tone for everything, no? When I think of a spa/clinic, I think of a non hectic space that evokes a calm presence. I mean after all, isn’t that why we visit spas/clinics? To escape our hectic schedules and relax even if for an hour?
Now that I’ve shared a TON load with you. I would love it if you shared your thoughts on laser hair removal. Have you tried it? Did it work for you? Are you looking to try it? I want to know everything, so let’s discuss!
Also, leave me comments you have and I’ll ask Kate and share in my next skin update with before and after pictures.
I’ve been considering a laser procedure for my chin as well. I have random hairs and once I pluck them, they grow back darker and annoyingly more evident than the last. #Superannoying I’m so over it! So, what should I budget for a chin procedure and being that I have super sensitive skin, what precaution will the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic take to prevent unnecessary reactions?
Thanks Jewel, this was really helpful! Xo
I’m glad your experience thus far is a positive one. You won’t regret it! Keep us posted 🙂
