Having been natural for only Four months, I’m still trying to get the hang of maintaining my hair. You wouldnt know it from my instagram posts, but my hair could use a lot of TLC. So to help me take much better care of my hair this year, I’ve decided to make a Natural Hair Goal list for 2015, ..Because I love lists and hopefully this will keep me on track with my hair goals.
1) Keep hair moisturized. I have very dry hair, and I used to think that washing my hair every couple of days would help keep it moisturized. Except, I found that my hair was still dry a day or two after wash. Now I’ve decided to wash once weekly and moisturize my hair using the LCO method.
For my LCO method, I use the following:
Leave in/Liquid- I use Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner and alternate with Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in, followed by Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie which doubles as my styler, followed by coconut oil to seal in moisture and add shine to my hair.
2) Protect my hair- I’m guilty of not always sleeping with a satin bonnet at night. I’m currently not using satin pillow case either, which is also bad because cotton pillow case sucks up moisture which is defeating the purpose of goal number one.
3) Deep Condition Weekly- I am guilty when it comes to not deep conditioning my hair. I deep condition once a month if even. Thinking back now to every time I’ve ever gotten highlights, my hair became brittle and fell off because I didn’t DC on the regular. Caring for natural hair can be time consuming, as I’m sure most of you can relate, I’ve started using the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner that triples as a DC and leave in. I think setting a day aside for my hair will allow me to fully give my hair the attention it needs.
4) Cleanse my hair- Instead of shampooing, I co-wash with As I am Coconut Co-Wash and alternative with Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Conditioner. Because I use lots of creams, gels and oils in my hair, I figure washing with shampoo once monthly or cleansing with Apple Cider Vinegar will cleanse my scalp to avoid build up.
5) Enjoy the Journey- It’s easy to covet other naturals’ curls and kinks, but I try to keep in mind that my natural hair journey is my own. My hair won’t have the same curl, volume as others and that’s ok. I’m enjoying my TWA phase right now, since this is the first time I’ve ever had short hair and once it grows, I just know I’m going to miss it. Besides, I’m much more concerned with healthy hair, vs. length; because the healthier your hair is the more likely it is to retain length.
So tell me, do you guys have natural hair/ hair goals for 2015?
xx,
Jewel
